EUfutuR: Future Europe – Identity, internationalization and institutionalization – Geopark Karawanken-Karavanke
The UNESCO global Geopark Karawanken-Karavanke (hereinafter Geopark) covers an area of 14 communities on both sides of the border. Formal legal Geopark works as a cross-border joint venture (ARGE), founded by communities and joint members. The bilateral cooperation in the form of an ARGE (society) is a major operational challenge, despite of detailed and specified Statute, due to different legal and financial-technical national frameworks. This operational challenge is primary addressed by the EufutuR project, with the main objectives: establishment of a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC), strengthening the bilateral identity and the international importance of Geopark. Activities within the project EUfutuR will lead to the first inter-municipal and inter-institutional cooperation between Austria and Slovenia which wants to establish itself as an EGTC – by that the Geopark will obtain the adequate formal legal organization for further enhanced cross-border territorial cooperation. Through public events (implementation of educational and professional events, language courses, Geofestival) and creative participation in Geopark area will be established a new form of bilateral cooperation among inhabitants of cross-border area. Through the active integration to the UNESCO geopark network (GGN) activities, the Geopark area will also be internationally better positioned.
The EUfutuR project will enhance the cooperation among local communities, schools and kindergartens, local inhabitants as target group and institutions, involved in regional development activities, based on joint management bodies development, educational strategies and awareness activities to strengthen common linguistic, cultural and natural identity of the area. The EufutuR project provides conscious, living bilateral identity, and contributes crucially to increase the project area recognition at the international level. To schools it offers an active management of their habitats and enhances the linguistic competence of citizens.
EUfutuR project is a project of cross-border cooperation, implemented during the Cooperation Programme Interreg V-A Slovenia-Austria in the programming period 2014-2020 and is co-financed by the European Union, through the European Regional Development Fund.
