The Karawanken Trail - Stage 7

Stage 7: Mežica - Volinjak - Leše - Alpine hut "Dom na Uršlji gori"

From Mežica set off past the boules court, skate course and pump track along the trail marked 'Koroška peš pot' (Carinthian hiking trail) to the socalled Hermonko chapel. The path runs through the forest, in places nearing the stream, until it emerges higher up onto a meadow and farm. Continue left into the forest and then to the top of Volinjak – a karst peak with a natural bridge and viewpoint towards the west. The bridge can be crossed with the help of wire ropes, then, on reaching the other side, there is a precipice with a magnificent view of Peca. Begin to descend in a northerly direction, where we will soon spot a trail marker pointing towards the east. Follow the marked path and after a few minutes we will emerge from the forest at the exact spot that is home to the two Leše churches of St. Ana and St. Volbenk. Continue to follow the trail markers to Obretanovo. Then follow the trail markers to Naravske Ledine. We will reach the Koča na Naravskih Ledinah mountain hut in approx. 1 h. From the hut follow the signs to Uršlja gora, which is reached in approx. 1 hr 30 min. Along the way we pass a hole where it is said that a stone sank into the ground under St. Ursula's foot. Shelter and accommodation is available at the Dom na Uršlji gori mountain hut, which is situated right next to the highest lying church and apiary in Slovenia.
