We are proud and delighted to announce that the Karawanken-Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark, in its still young existence, was nominated for the "European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism" award this year.
We were one of four nominees from among all the sustainable tourism destinations in Europe. Even the high-ranking jury from the European Commission was enthusiastic about the results achieved so far in shaping our young, bilateral and sustainable region.
In particular, our approach to guided and organised tours, our practical efforts in the areas of visitor flow management (visitor flow analysis), sustainable mobility solutions, programmes for schools and especially the clear bilateral cooperation, which is unique in Austria, were convincing.
The jury members were especially impressed by the practical, day-to-day implementation of our cross-border activities and the high intensity of European projects for the further development of our region.
In the final, we were the only representatives of a rural destination alongside 2 small towns and a medium-sized town - in any case, we feel like winners on all fronts, with this tremendous confirmation that we are striving for the absolutely right development of our region.
It gives us the motivation to continue on our path, with the same dynamic and with even more vigour to establish our bilateral green destination, which is becoming increasingly popular throughout Europe.
