Project I-SWAMP: Integrated monitoring and protection of small wetlands in the Alps

OVERVIEW

Ponds and other small wetlands have been largely destroyed or altered in the Alpine region and are often not properly managed. The I-SWAMP project is developing a method for conserving small alpine wetlands with an approach based on both science-based decision-making and ownership by local communities. A protocol for monitoring and conserving small alpine wetlands will help local governments make informed decisions about wetland management. Environmental education courses and activities will increase the knowledge of communities, the public, and economic actors about the blue infrastructure of the Alps. This integrated approach will help protect and restore wetlands on a regional scale to prevent further loss of biodiversity, habitats, and ecosystem services.
