The trilingual interactive web viewer of the UNESCO Global Geopark Karawanken is a platform to combine geodata from Austria and Slovenia and to display them together in a single application.
This unique opportunity gives the 14 partner communities of the UNESCO Global Geopark Karawanken the chance to exchange and harmonize their geodata across borders. The application provides a central access to officially available geodata and connects the users with the official portals. They are also informed about responsibilities and contact persons.
Visitors to the Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark can explore the rich geological diversity of the area in the Geopark Webviewer via the "Experience Geopark" menu, which includes locations of geological hotspots and water phenomena as well as their descriptions. The menu "Water management" is intended for more demanding user:s who would like to explore the topic more intensively.
This webviewer is an achievement of the INTERREG V-A SI-AT project KaraWAT - Strategy for the Sustainable Management of Water Resources in the Karavanke-Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark. It serves as a tool for Geopark communities to cooperate across borders for the protection and sustainable use of water resources, as well as in the field of disaster prevention and mitigation. The platform also supports sustainable tourism in the Geopark area, as it invites visitors to explore the natural features and learn about their characteristics, threats and ways to protect them.
The webviewer was developed in cooperation between two research institutions, the Geological Survey of Slovenia and the University of Applied Sciences Carinthia (UNESCO Chair for the Management of Protected Areas) together with the practical partner EVTZ Geopark Karawanken m.b.H.. Support was provided by the Office of the Carinthian Provincial Government, Department No. 8 Environment, Energy and Nature Conservation and Department No. 12 Water Management, Podzemlje Pece d.o.o., Dr. Walter Poltnig, Dr. Mihael Brenčič, the Slovenian Water Agency, the Slovenian Environmental Agency, and the ARRS Program Group P1-0020 Groundwater and Geochemistry.
